Math 8 (Pre-Algebra) Course Description

Math 8 (Pre-Algebra) prepares students with the skills necessary before taking Algebra 1 (a high school credited course).  Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following concepts:  the properties of mathematics, solving equations and inequalities, rational and irrational numbers, graphing equations and inequalities, proportional and nonproportional relationships, applying algebra to geometry, transformational geometry, functions, data analysis , measurement and personal finance.  Students will use graphing calculators in this course.

Algebra I (8^th Grade) Course Description

8^th grade Algebra I is an advanced math course (a high school credited course).  Students will explore the following concepts:  linear expressions, equations, inequalities, functions, exponents, expressions, factoring, quadratic equations, arithmetic and geometric sequences.  Students will use technology to model mathematical situations.  Algebra I students will take the STAAR 9^th grade End of Course (EOC) state assessment.
Students must meet three of the following to be enrolled in 8^th grade Algebra I:  (1) end of year Pre-Algebra average ≥ 90, (2)  Masters Grade Level (Level III) on 8^th grade Math STAAR test,  (3)  Meet required standards on RJH Algebra I Placement Test,  (4) Teacher recommendation.  Parent permission is also required in addition to meeting three of the four above criteria.
